A chapter of my life comes to a close.

About two years ago, my graduating class starting brainstorming a film that would eventually become KITES. I ended up directing it, and it's been one of the most interesting and prolonged experiences of my life. I'm pretty happy with the end result- it may not stand up to the stuff done at Goblins or Calarts, but it is sincere in it's intent.

Everybody worked so hard: storyboarding, design, layout, modeling, texturing, lighting, special effects, animation, rendering, compositing, music, foley... This was a beast of a project.

Here are some sills of the final product. You might blow this film off as corny, melodramatic, garish in color, or inconsistently animated. And you might be right. But after surviving the gauntlet of directorship, I realize I am a film finisher. The film is finished. It's not the opus of my career, or even close. It is, however, a little cross section of my feeling and abilities for this short stage in my life.

baby!

Still in debate about her name. But she's a great cryer, and she has a world-class sucking instinct.

Two sketches

Two more sketches

Another sketch of Detective Hanshichi. I wanted to accentuate the faceless hostility of a cramped urban center like old Edo.

Pretty colors - interesting idea- not quite there yet though.

craft project

I was out taking a walk yesterday, and this just jumped into my head as I walked though a playground. I like the mix of the strange, the nostalgic, and the playful.
